Do you ever wonder what life will look like one year from now… or if you are really ambitious, five years from now? Or do you have a dream in your heart, but just don’t see how that dream comes to life anytime soon?
When you have gone through a major life transition like divorce, the heartbreak, burdens, and demands of life can feel so heavy that your dreams and visions for the future seem miles away or even impossible. But, what if those dreams in your heart are simply waiting for you to take a small step toward them to begin bringing them to life? What if you had a clear path set out for you that would bring that future dramatically closer to your present reality? Enter the Vision Cast.
You may think that Vision Casting is just a fancy buzz-word for the annual corporate retreat strategy and goal-setting sessions that sound great but then get forgotten in a month, but I’m here to tell you (and there is a lot of science to back me on this) that if you take just a short amount of time to map out your vision on paper, you increase your likelihood of bringing that vision to life by more than 40%!!! I don’t know about you, but I like those odds and can use all the help I can get!
So then, what is a Vision Cast and where do you start? If you Google it, you will get a ton of advice that can make it feel pretty overwhelming, so my goal today is to simplify it for you. It really comes down to a few things.
Clarity
First, it helps you clarify your vision. When your whole world has been turned upside down, all of the dreams and goals you had in your marriage have been turned on their head… I know mine were. It took me some time to figure out what I even wanted my new future to look like. I knew what I didn’t want it to look like, but allowing my heart to dream again felt almost painful, and seriously hard. Identifying your gifts and putting them through the lens of your life now is a great place to start.
Strategy
Every dream has an obstacle… at least the ones worth dreaming do. Looking at what potential obstacles may stand in the way and coming up with at least one thing you can do to help climb over those obstacles empowers you to move toward your dream with purpose. It also gives you a prayer list for the things it will take that only God can do. And friend, trust me, He wants to help you! He is for you, and He loves to show off for His kids!
Determination
This is where we DECIDE. We decide to move in the direction of our dreams. How many goals and plans have you had for yourself that never came to be because you did not set your face toward those goals with determination and the commitment to keep your promises to yourself? Would you break a promise to your best friend? Then why is it ok to break the promises that you make to you?
A life lesson that has made all the difference in the world for me is that realized dreams feel the best when they are other-centered. Purpose and fulfillment come when we are serving others and making a difference in the world. Think of how you can bless others when you honor the commitment to yourself to move in the direction of your dreams. This will keep you going on the days where it feels hard to move forward.
There are a few other things that help in this process like visualization, identifying your unique gifting and reminding yourself daily of your commitment to his vision that are especially helpful. If you would like a copy of the template that I use, you can download it on my website here… it is my gift to you.
However you decide to do it, the key is deciding to do it. Whether you create a vision board, put Post-It notes all over your house to point toward your vision, or something else, the benefit of getting your dreams out of your heart and onto something tangible are game-changing.
And don’t forget to download the Vision Cast worksheet here to give you some help in the process.
I would love to hear from you if you found this helpful. I would also love to hear from you if you have a testimony of how a vision cast has helped moved you toward living out your dream. Drop me a line at [email protected] with your story!
